The predecessor of the NJCC was the Jersey Osborne Group (JOG), based on the Osborne Computer with the CP/M operating system.
JOG was founded in June of 1981, and joined the First Osborne Group (FOG), a national Osborne organization centered in California, as Member #138 in 1983. Membership in JOG/FOG grew to over 200 members (with 75-80 members attending each monthly meeting).
After Osborne Computer filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, however, the Osborne support of various computer clubs located around the country (JOG was one of many) died out. By late 1986 JOG/FOG active membership was drastically on the decline, and in late 1988 John Huemer volunteered to take over the group if he could make numerous changes, including changing to DOS from CP/M as the primary operating system focus for the club.
John was elected President of the "big changeover" with publicity including a flyer with a newborn baby on it with the new club name: "NJCC" (New Jersey Computer Club). The first meeting of the NJCC was held January 11, 1989, with 58 people attending a Micro Pro Word Processor demo.
