New Jersey Computer Club

Fred Sabin, (NJCC President)

I would like to welcome you to the New Jersey Computer Club (NJCC)! We are a not-for-profit
organization under Section 501 ( c )(7) of the Internal Revenue Code, dedicated to educating the public about computer systems, software, and their uses; providing community service to charities and educational groups; awarding an annual NJCC Memorial Award; and sharing knowledge and social activities with other computer enthusiasts. The NJCC is a member of the Association of Personal Computer User Groups (APCUG), and we have members from youngsters to great-grandparents, and from newbies who have yet to buy or use a computer to professionals with years of computer experience.

The predecessor of the NJCC was the Jersey Osborne Group (JOG), based on the Osborne Computer with the CP/M operating system. JOG was founded in June of 1981, and joined the First Osborne Group (FOG), a national Osborne organization centered in California, as Member #138 in 1983. Membership in JOG/FOG grew to over 200 members (with 75-80 members attending each monthly meeting). After Osborne Computer filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, however, the Osborne support of various computer clubs located around the country (JOG was one of many) died out. By late 1986 JOG/FOG active membership was drastically on the decline, and in late 1988 John Huemer volunteered to take over the group if he could make numerous changes, including changing to DOS from CP/M as the primary operating system focus for the club. John was elected President of the "big changeover" with publicity including a flyer with a newborn baby on it with the new club name: "NJCC" (New Jersey Computer Club). The first meeting of the NJCC was held January 11, 1989, with 58 people attending a Micro Pro Word Processor demo.

Companies who have since visited the NJCC and given product demonstrations have included
Borland, Corel, Microsoft, Intel, AMD, Lotus, WordPerfect, dBase, Alpha Software, Norton,
Broderbund, Caere, Symantec, Claris, Novell, Adobe, Micrografx, Fractal Design, Davidson Software, TravRoute, Intuit, Dragon, Gateway, McAfee, DK Software, AskSam, Belkin, PowerQuest, Indelible Blue, MGI, Smart Computing, Jasc Software, Creative Labs, Acronis, Webroot, and many others.

The NJCC normally meets monthly (second Wednesday except July and August) at the North Branch Reformed Church on Route 28 (at Milltown Road) in Bridgewater, with socializing, workshops, and demonstrations of software/hardware products. Special meetings are also periodically scheduled. For more information go to our website at http://www.njcc.org/ , or call 908-725-3193 or 732-469-3843.

We welcome guests who may be interested in sharing computer experiences with us to a meeting or two free of charge. Membership in the NJCC (Free for students through high school; $12.50 annually for a full time post-high school student; and $25 annually for up to two persons at the same address) gives the additional benefits of free door prize raffles; member auctions; computer event tickets; NJCCMAIL notifications; special member discounts; NJCC “hotlines” for computer assistance; etc.

Although we primarily support IBM-compatible computers with the Windows/DOS operating systems,we also have members using Linux and Apple systems. So, please come and join us to find out more about who we are and what we do, and please consider becoming an active member if you are not already one, so that you can participate to a deeper level with others like yourself in the joys of using a computer system and software, and sharing your experiences with others.
